System 6 images - Norwegian language anyone ???

Does anyone have Norwegian language System 6 disk images to upload onto MacintoshGarden? Any version is OK, but ofcourse 6.0.8 is preferred. I know this is a long shot, since Norwegian is a very "small" language (and a small country). Hoping to be lucky for once ...

Hi,

The person to answer your question is SheepmyShaver123. There is a link to 25GB of Apple System Software goodness somewhere on the site. I suspect that it is in there.

The System 7.0 link in Apple.com is here:

If you mean the Mac OS Anthology, that starts at System 7. I had a look around but this is actually pretty hard to find. Archaic Apples had 6.0.5 and 6.0.7 but the site is long dead.

Tell UFK, he has the System 6 images on the early 1993 Developer CDs.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion. Do you mean I just send the user UFK a private message through the forum?

Mitrokhin's Pandora Wired Server have the Developer CD images available for download. Just search Wired 1.3.4 or Qwired, download, set the tracker wired.zankasoftware.com, search for Pandora and done.

Well, I tried the Pandora Wired Server (thanks for letting me download just like that), and found, downloaded an burned the Apple Developer CD's from 1993 (april and october issues), but none of them contained any Norwegian System 6 images, just system 7.1. The US 6.0.8 images were present on both discs, but that's not what I was looking for. The reason I need the Norwegian ones, is special letters in Norwegian and Norwegian layout keyboards ( the letters are Æ,Ø and Å), which can't be utilized under the international english version of System 6. So I'm still desperately seeking the elusive Norwegian System 6 (any version) disk images. So, did I download the wrong CD's or what? I haven't tried any of the other CD's out there on Pandora yet. Please enlighten me, someone, anyone? I'm unbelievably depressed now, for not finding the correct disk images... Smile

Can't one use the Norwegian keyboard layout files from System 7.x or Mac OS 8.x? I've never done it but I'd give it a try.

@PowerBook: would a Swedish sys be of any help? I can create Æ (from Shift + Alt + Ä) and Ø (from Shift + Alt + Ö). I'm not sure if I have anything earlier than 7.x but at least it should double your chances. Wink

PowerBook, it's Developer CD Volume III or IV, not the newer 1993.

OK, my bad. I better get back to Pandora to get the correct CD's then. Once again, thanks a lot.

And also big thanks to the others here, who are being extremely helpful in suggesting workarounds. I'll be sure to try out the tips posted here.

If you could share the swedish system 6 images, that would be great. I collect these old system images (especially nordic ones), so if you could upload such (800K) images to any filesharing service anytime soon, it would be greatly appreciated?

Well, I was about to ask, because of your insistence on a Norwegian SSW 6.0.8 (to date); Why not a later Norwegian OS, say 7.0 or newer (which is available)?

Version 7.0 to 7.55 are free downloads from Apple. Here are the Norwegian 7.0 links:
http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates...
If you go up a level (click the "Parent Directory" link) you'll find newer stuff.

I actually already have norwegian system 7.0.1 installed on my Mac Plus, which I want to run norwegian system 6.0.8 on. The reason I prefer system 6 before system 7, is smaller memory demands and a wish to have a swifter running OS in general. I only want the swedish system 7.0.x images for my collection really.

You have an an actual working Mac Plus; And you have that Norwegian SSW 7.0.1 running from what? Floppies?

Sorry if I seem impertinent here, but a Mac Plus did not have a HD and you'd likely need an external HD to run SSW 7+ effectively (which I assume that you would have)?

SSW 6.0.8 would be a *lot* less demanding memory-wise on a Plus, admittedly. Sadly, I don't know of the whereabouts of any Norwegian SSW 6.x installer disks Sad - the location and obtaining of SSW 7.0 and newer, for various language speaking groups (including Norwegian), is not a problem (as you already would know).

Ok. Found OS 6.0.3 SE containing 4 disks. I suspect they´re HD floppies… Anyway here´s a link
http://data.fuskbugg.se/skogsturken/System%206.0.3%20SE.zip
The disk images are zipped I´m afraid in individual archives. However trying DiskCopy in BasiliskII under 7.5.5, after un-zipping the archives w Expander, on the 'damaged' images provided succesful! So, it seems this stuff survived Zip and could used to master four HD floppies. Held og lycke! [sp?]

Yes, I forgot to mention, my Mac Plus has been modified to feature a "blindingly slow" 20MB SCSI internal harddrive (probably simlilar to the harddrive that sits in the SE model). I also thought this to be impossible, but a company (or brand) called "SYMBIOTIC" seems to have pulled it off (there are two stickers on the machine that says so anyway). Anyway, I guess this must be the oldest Mac to have an internal harddrive, so I'm quite pleased with the purchase, as it was only about 60 bucks (NOK 400).

@SwedeBear
Thanks a lot for these swedish images. I'll add them to my collection. Tack så mycket Smile

Yeeks! I hope its not too similar - I once owned a Mac SE with an original internal 20 MB drive. It was a brick! Smile I also recall having to juggle disk space so as not to fill up that precious 20 Megs Sad

Don't think I could dispute that Smile - I hope you can get the SSW 6.x you want for it. I also hope you get many more years out of the Plus, too.

Would you happen to have a copy of Expander to share aswell? I seem to have misplaced my copy, and can't find it when I search Google (I keep finding only different versions of StuffIt Expander). Thanks.

I used StuffIt Expander under an emulated OS 9 in SheepShaver, just to make sure. That version, 5 IIRC, can be dl from here; http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/stuffit-expander-55

OK, I see. I just ment that there's a utility for unpacking older .sit-files in OS X that is called just "Expander", which I accidentally deleted here the other day. I thought you were using that to unstuff.

Anyway, I have now acquired the proper Vol. III and IV Developer CDs from the Pandora wired server, and I have found norwegian system 6.0.4 and 6.0.5 on the CDs, and successfully managed to install the latest version onto my modified Macintosh Plus with internal hard drive. It runs more smoothly, and now I can use the special norwegian letters. Thanks to everyone that helped me on the way.

Last question: Now 6.0.5 is great, but I'd prefer 6.0.8 ofcourse. Now, is there a way to load norwegian keyboard layout (i.e. use the keyboard file or files from my norwegian 6.0.5 installation) onto an international english system 6.0.8 installation, so I can fully utilize my norwegian keyboard, and use the special norwegian letters? I still haven't found norwegian system 6.0.8, and that's somewhat annoying still, I must confess.

I just saw a Norwegian movie called TROLL HUNTER

I didn´t know the Trolls were part of the Norwegian tradition
the movie was entertaining enough with good FX
but I was definitely impress by the snowy landscapes

I want to go there.

Trollhunter is pretty good to be a norwegian movie (they are usually very dull and melancolic). This one is very different and with entertaining effects aswell. Trolls are indeed a part of norwegian folklore, and very unique nordic heritage mythology creatures.

Norway is a great country nature-wise, so you should pay a visit (and I mean really pay, because everything is extremely expensive here in Norway). You better work a lot of extra hours to save up some cash before you go Smile

Just a little problem,
Norwegian language seems to be really-really hard.

Yep I downloaded the Movie from a spanish Web-page, and they have ALL kind of good movies
not just the commercial ones,
see I also downloaded a Swedish movie long ago called (Let me in)
became decently popular in Mexico, even the NorthAmericans made an English version
but it wasn´t as good as the Swedish.

mmmm, 'Låt den rätte komma in'. Reading the novell is the ultimate creepiest. We lived for a short period in the area where the original novell is set. Didn´t ease my mind when I read the book I can tell…
