Please, UFK, do you have these betas from your ATS/ADC Seed CDs and upload it from filedropper as segmented stuffit archive (multipart ZIP archive & iso image file are only for full CD images)?

Seems I was incorrect. I at one time had a Mac OS 8.5 file, was probably the GM release so I tossed it years ago.

Instead, I uploaded the file I remembered and thought was 8.5, Mac OS 8 D11E4. You already have it on your Mediafire, and a quick comparison of folder size of my MacOS8_D11E4_Folder and yours were exactly equal.

Regardless, here's the link to it

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MOSKFXS8

I have some other files in the same place as I found this beta that maybe you don't have. They are:

A/UX System Startup 3.0.1, March 12, 1993
System .imgs, these are from an old site so probably everyone has them:
System .85 has "Macintosh Guided Tour.image"
.1 - can't mount
.3 - can't mount
3.1.1 has "Guided Tour 512ke.image"
3.2 (just a copy of Finder and System)
4.1 - can't mount
5.5 (looks like the Finder, System, some DAs)
Some Rhapsody .imgs - can't mount

I just stuffed the whole folder. Maybe something in there will catch your interest

D11E4 was one of the old Copland builds. There's two in general circulation (D11 and D7) and there's a third mentioned on this blog: http://www.pagetable.com/?p=211

Here's a vid of D11E4 booting on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTBJlqPlz2o

You can see Copland D11e4 screenshots in action at Forcedperfect's Betaworld:

http://betaworld.forcedperfect.net/

Through it is not least, he does not have the copies of OS betas, only screenshots are given from some people in a long time ago.

Does anyone have Mac OS X Developer Preview version 1? (not DP2, DP3 or DP4)

I also do remember that someone had a Mac OS 9.1 beta on OSBA a few years back. Unfortunately, I didn't get it in time to acquire it as the FTP in which it was hosted on went kaputt. So it is out in the wild somewhere but might prove a bit tricky to track down. >_>

I have a yellow-box (or bluebox?) pre-alpha/beta. I am fairly sure it is the PPC version (same as the x86 version) of pre OS9 (I really need to research my Mac OS releases) Smile

PS. I may be wrong, and it is the pre-alpha for x86
PPS. I cannot guarantee the readability of the CD it is backed up to Sad

I remember an old Mac magazine article about Mac OS System 7 on an Intel 80386 processor type, but can't find the article again.

IIGS_User,

Project Star Trek. I read it in MacUser, but there's more than a few detailed descriptions of it, why it was developed, why it got canned, what worked and what didn't.

But I've never come across a copy, a shame. I did find the Finder 7.1 source years ago - many years before the ROM source surfaced, but I didn't download all of it, keep it any of it, from the days of 14.4k modems, when disk space was expensive and before I had burnable optical media.

@themacmeister: The Yellow and Blue Boxes were part of Rhapsody. After Copland was finally scrapped, Apple merged with NeXT and used Openstep as the basis for their new OS. Rhapsody ran on Macs as well as regular PCs. Then it too got canned as a major Mac OS, but the PPC version was released as Mac OS X Server 1.x. Yellowbox is the development environment and runs on OSXS and Windows. Bluebox was the "classic" mode. It was released seperately for Rhapsody DR1 as it wasn't ready when the OS shipped to developers. DR2 had it built-in.

@IIGS_User: That would be "Star Trek". If you could find that article again it would be an interesting read.

It has Wikipedia entries, and a few of the longer-established Mac-oriented sites stillhave articles telling you the same story. It could make an interesting bit of research, GIYF. It got some disclosure in Apple Confidential too.

In later times (now), It must be a preparation for a processor type switch which did not happened at the time. Instead of Intel, Apple switched to PowerPC first.

The article I remember was a small side notice, I could look into the magazine CD-ROMs (the magazine pages itself on CD-ROM) to find it again (maybe).

Star Trek was never released to anyone. It is known that one Apple employee who worked on it (he left, then went back to Apple a few years ago) has a working machine with it. But other than that, it's not around...

I can't find this article again, the only I remember it was a very small side note.

I even can't remember which german Mac magazine reported about (Macwelt and MacUp are the two candiates of this time).

I'm sure it was MacUser, but it could have been MacWorld /MacFormat. I'll still have the article, but it will be one of the many thousands I have filed away. I favour MacUser because I can remember the typeface of the article and it being in a "News" section. MacWorld and MacFormat were not very good at that.
If anyoe can narrow it down to a magazine and year (and maybe even an edition) I'll dig out the article and scan it.

I'm really psyched to finally have a build of Tempo. Thanks ufk!!

It seems all these cdr files are corrupt. A number of the software installers in 8.0a2c5 ask for the source disk (even though the files are there). 7.6a3c4 and 7.6b5 can't install the base OS for the same reason ("please insert the disk"). System 7.5.4 Update 1.0s1c3 "Son of Buster" too.

I think Snow Leopard is somehow corrupting the files. It would be better if you could use stuffit on these in a non-OS X system. The .img files should be OK as their filesystem isn't being exposed (which is good as it seems all of your remaining uploads are .img), but it seems any .cdr files made with DU in SL can't be trusted.

This because of bad creation dates, weird, inside the UFK's catalog has the original creation dates listed for example leaping one hour later (inside the UFK's catalog: 11:00 PM, inside the currect .cdr file: 12.00 AM). To avoid, use ResEdit, open the installer script, check the infs resource, check any/most ID, and in the Creation Date, type 0. Save it.

And one weird thing is the .cdr files uses HFS+ filesystem. This means to change the creation date to the another one, making the installation unsuccessful. You should to create them with Toast instead, and please, if you uploading the .img files, make sure it MUST include the resource fork because most .img files listed here are compressed or not.

For 7.6a3 (I've fixed the installer file to force any creation date), I cannot boot them in Sheepshaver, it shows illegal instruction, now what?

@Protocol 7: OK, let's consider all .cdr files as not trustworthy. As I said above, they have been made with DU in SL and thus they got the HFS+ file system, I guess.

@sheepmyshaver123: Following your suggestion, here is 7.6a3 again. This time, the image file has been made with Toast8 in SL, enforcing HFS instead of HFS+. Does it work better this time?
And yes, all compressions have been made using the SL standard compression tool. It does preserve the resource fork, as far as I know. Correct?

Tempo installs just fine. but the install icons are generic. I've tried rebuilding the desktop database and running Diskwarrior on the volume but the correct icons don't show. (I checked on another machine and the icons are fine. It's an issue at this end. I guess something had to give with installing all these beta releases.)

BTW, while the zipped .img file for Mac OS 8f4c1 works fine here, it has to be unzipped in OS X to retain the resource fork. It might be a good idea to use the toast approach for those too (either add the .img file or the folder containing it) to facilitate those who don't have OS X.

Thanks for your patience UFK. It's too bad I didn't discover this issue with the .cdr files sooner as you'd already uploaded all of them. Tempo was the only one I was really interested in up to that point. But at least we now have a working solution.
