Is That Server Move Ever Coming?

We raised money for a server move nearly a year ago, but nothing ever seemed to come of it. Applications as small as 40MB are archived. The Upload Game is broken half of the time, and we've used Megaupload for many things, which is painful to both upload and download, what with the ads, the CAPTCHAS, the throttles, etc. (and just try uploading Megaupload on a shared LAN and see if anyone notices!)

For me it's mainly a lack of time Sad

No knowing what Maedi is up to, though...

Sorry, but I gotta laugh when I hear how "painful" Megaupload is. I never find "clicking" to be painful, but that's just me. Now, if one has to chop 2 cords of wood with an axe in snowy, sub freezing weather, I would call that painful. Wink

I wouldn't say that Megaupload is painful. I would say it's like driving a beat-up 1980s Nissan with no AC. It may suit some just fine, but the rest of us would like something better.

Definitely.

Leaving the Megaupload issue aside, I think it's high time there was a new server. People tend to be annoyed when they donate and nothing happens. Tongue Oh, and where exactly is the Mac Garden hosted (I'm assuming somewhere in the USA)?

Downloading from Mega Upload isn't painful, it's mildly annoying. My experiences with uploading, however...

Is this an actual server that the Macintosh Garden admins will have and run physically from their place, or a dedicated server plan for tons more space?

Cheers!

My experience with MegaUpload is that how painful you find it is greater based on how slow you computer is.
For example on an scale of, 1 being the least painful and 10 being the most, my powerbook 500mhz would be a 7, and my dell 2gz would be a 1.

Thanks nmz502! I think that finally explains it... I just couldn't understand what the issue was, I've never had any issues with Megaupload, but then again, I'm using a 1.33 MHz PowerBook.

Some people mention throttling, but I always get full upload speed (max for my ISP) after it ramps up in a couple of minutes. As far as downloading, I've seen good speeds at 800 Kbs, which is pretty darn fast considering it's a free service.

@Vitoarc I'm assuming you meant 1.33 Ghz Wink

My internet is about 2Mbps, so I tend to notice how slow Megupload is (at least on Friday nights, when it's really slow)

I have a 2.4GHz MacBook and MegaUpload fails to upload every time, always giving an error message.

It used to upload on an older G5 iMac, but it was slow and it slowed down everything else.

Has anybody actully paid for a MegaUpload account? If so, are the upload times faster? Since I don't pay for it, I'm happy with the service it delivers.

Not paid for it either. For the upload-once, which I throttle to about 40KB/s (OSX util called 'throttled'), download-many times, usually at 600KB/s model, it's perfect. the files are nearly always available and if they're not, they're back up in 10 minutes.

So for what we use it for, it's ideal. Some others are also ideal, some are awful.

I just got a mothly account yesterday, and promptly downloaded 6 x 430MB parts of a file in less than an hour (8Mb/s). All at once!

If the uploading is remotely as good as downloading -- you are on a winner!

@Euryale (and really, everyone):

I don't have control over such things. I just keep the site up and running. Maedi pays for the server and would be in charge of upgrading it, you'd really have to ask him to get any definitive information.

Sorry Sad
