Sawtooth installing Os 8.6 issues

I downloaded the 8.5 & 8.5.1 image as well as the 8.6 update
Also have the 2.5.1 rom
I used "Wish I were" to install OS on a 400mhz sawtooth
Then copied the 2.5.1 rom to the system folder
But OS 8.6 only boots with all extentions turned off
Furthermore the finder always crashes after booting

I have 2 sawtooth units (agp) and can't get them to boot
Took the battery out as well but still no go.

Any ideas as to what's wrong?

Any particular reason that you have to install 8.6 on these Macs? I ask because the 9.0.4 disks from here would make life a lot more easier for you than going down the "Wish I Were" route, at a guess. There's one 9.0.4 specifically for the sawtooth too, but the universal 9.0.4 here is also good.

I have the full Sawtooth 8.6 install CD. That'd be the easiest route for you. I can upload that. Can you open zip files OK or should I use stuffit to compress it?

Pretty sure I can open all files.
I have both a 400 GHZ & 500 GHZ agp sawtooth
Please let me know when the upload is ready.
Thank you.

Can you show the part number? Can you upload it to MediaFire?

Hope I'm wrong, but there were no 500MHz Sawtooths before OS9 came out at the start of 2000. There was meant to be, from August 1999, but Motorola had a manufacturing issue that limited the G4 to no faster than 450MHz. This doesn't mean that won't boot and operate fully in OS8.6 though.

I'm not too familiar with the various G4 models. I just had this iso lying around. My G4s are Gigabit Ethernets and require 9.0.4 minimum.

Here it is http://www.multiupload.com/TI3S0E2KA5

@sheepmyshaver: I only have this as an iso and it's got modified timestamps. So it's not archive quality. I've no idea what the part number is.

Be aware that if you've updated the firmware on this machine, you will *not* be able to install or run System 8.6 any longer, even though the machine may have shipped with it. This "feature" is found on other Macs as well, including clamshell iBooks. Apple doesn't warn you about it, either. So, in general, at least if you want to install the original system on a particular machine, you'd better ask around about what happens to that possibility if you update the firmware.

What is the original firmware?
I googled 4.2.8 as the latest, but can't find info on the original.

Either way, 8.6 boots with all extensions off, but crashes the finder within 30 seconds of use.
Any pointers on doing this without the discs
Using the rom as I did in my first post
. . .?

You might try, if you have either, installing any version of System 9 or even OSX, just to verify that the machine is bootable with some system. If you can get a system installed and booted, it's easy to find out what your firmware version is by looking in System Profiler. If it's 4.2.8, you can forget installing any version of System 8 ...

I mentioned earlier that the 9.0.4 from here is good. It should make things easier to begin with. I've used this universal boot installer to install to Sawtooth G4, and other G4 and G3 Macs that are able to boot up from this OS (and SheepShaver). Its a very good copy, if its still available from that megaupload link, (its been a while since I last checked). I haven't used the 9.1.x installers from here as I already possess those in hard copy.
Hardhead. Your advice is gold. Much better than I could've put it.

Both units are 4.2.8
However I found a post at the g4 cube forum about flashing previous firmware (down grading)
However I have yet to find a source for firmware other than 4.2.8

Good luck, my friend. I tried the same thing when I unknowingly upgraded the firmware on my iBook, with absolutely no success at all. As you probably know, or will soon discover, Apple has its secrets, and guards them diligently. One thing they *don't* want you to do is to downgrade to a previous version of anything.

Just out of curiosity, why are you intent on installing 8.6 on these machines? (Personally, I think 8.6 is head and shoulders the best operating system Apple ever wrote; but I can use 9.x in a pinch if I really need to boot a non-OSX system.)

(Sorry, been away from computers for 6 days ...) Mmm, yeah, I understand ... I've tried both Basilisk and SheepShaver, and found them both rather seriously wanting - mini vMac does OK for the really old stuff that won't even run under System 7. My own best solution is a Smurf (B&W G3), which I run under 8.6, and a Quadra 840AV under System 7.6.1. I find that nearly everything will run on one or both of them. And while 840AVs are hard to find, there are lots of Smurfs around for under $100 - worth considering (8.6 installs on the Smurf even *after* a firmware update!).

Very interesting, I never knew that with the firmware update you couldn't run some of the older system versions even if they came with them. Though it's been a few years since I have looked I also didn't realize that the older beige machines were getting that hard to find. It wasn't long ago you could buy a pile of beige machines that would at least get the flashing question mark for 20 bucks. Of course the shipping was triple the purchase price LOL People found them useless unlike us on here who know better. However now they are relics so the price is going up and it's slim pickens.
