OS9 updates

Did anybody happen to have saved the multilanguage 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates locally?
I did not think of that, as they were always available via Software Update or as downloads on Apple´s servers.
I tried to upgrade my D-9.1 yesterday, but the updates seem to have been dropped. Sad
Actually, I had been a little surprised Apple keeeping such old stuff alive until recently, I should not have taken that for granted.

It "looks" as though they still may be available. But its possible they are going to enforce "point of origin" DL's from Apple. I went as far as the link I provide, and on that page you get the choice of 9.x Updates... I was using a US proxy so it was going to give me US updates from that point on. See how you go. If you're successful. Please archive.

Hopefully this helps but I haven't tried to download anything.

Update:
The pages are still there but the actual downloads are not (by and large, the buggy 9.0.4 update still is!).

I tried the 9.1 International English download since I'm in the right zone, but it wouldn't let me. (Perhaps the update is still there, and they just detected the computer is running 9.2.2 and blocked it.)

Making the downloads country specific now is ludicrous when they've been freely available to anyone for the past 10+ years.
I downloaded some other language updaters earlier this year, everything worked fine...so I guess this is a parting FU from old Steve.

The 9.0.4/9.1/9.2.1/9.2.2 Updaters were available (in most instances) for the following languages:
North American English, International English, French, German, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Danish,
Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese [P.R.C]

Thanks for the pointers comrades. For me there is no way to access the DL. I am either trapped in an endless loop (select version/agree to licence) or I get a page not found error.
This lets me think Apple removed the files for what reason ever.
Lets hope someone has the files stored on backup volumes.

I've got a few I downloaded earlier this year, plus U.S. and International. Just have to find what hard drive they are on.

Software Update is still working for me, just downloaded iPod Software Updater 1.3 to test.

Would be great, if you could make those available xeter. I found SU working too with 10.3, its only the niner updates that went to nirvana.
Right now I am backing up my last installed System Folder with D-9.2.2 to a magneto-optical drive.
Usually I prefer to make a clean install rather than moving something around.
Arghh, I forgot how slooow the MO is, copying 150MB will take ages!

Going to regional or country specific Apple websites might help. I know I've seen the downloads elsewhere.

I've just run across the 9.2.2. International English Update so I'll put that up.

I kept all my OS9 downloads, when you have a dozen Macs to keep up-tp-date and you're paying through the nose for broadband (as I was then), you keep the downloads. So I should have everything in International English. Sorry no other languages,
But a 3 minute search in Google did find a few fan sites hosting the US English updates. Hoping Google can do the same for the language you need.
Ironic, that the pre-01/01/1998 "Legacy" software downloads page still works perfectly - so everything is available for a IIgs, but not for a G4.

When a regional Apple service centre closed down (after getting screwed by Apple's national branch), they gave me boxes of Mac OS discs - many of which I've never looked into - since they knew I was an OS 9 fetishist, and Mac OS was dead in the water as far as Apple HQ was concerned. Have just found a multi-region 9.2.1 update disc with 2 English and five foreign languages...including German. No doubt other installers will surface as I fossick around.

Gonna take me a while to get all this up though.

As I mentioned above, which is why I'm concentrating on later ones.

To MG users in general:
The installers are Self Mounting Images. Should I convert to Disk Image first and then Stuff them or just Stuff them. (Haven't done this before)

I've title them "Updaters – Mac OS" so they don't get lost in all the Mac OS disc images when you look at them in the "List of all..." view.

Just stuff them.

Okay. I guess there is just something down at Apple, it's not like they can't afford to keep them online. There is really no reason for them to do it, but they still keep System 6 available so why remove Mac OS 9?

Time will prove what's going on here. I downloaded all of the 9.0.4 updaters in case they would also vanish from the web. I managed to get all down but the Danish version.

Glad to hear, you have the original disks xeter! There is no real hurry, if the files can be retrieved at all.
T-1000: Some SheepShaver users will be thankful for 9.0.4 too. Better to grab it while you can. Smile

bertyboy: I found a Intl. English 9.2.1/9.2.2 updates too, but I am rather doubtful whether those will work with localized OS9 versions. Most of the random links Google comes up with point to Apple Support - with well known result, sooner or later .
BTW: At MacUser.de someone is looking for the updates too:
http://www.macuser.de/forum/f6/updates-mac-os-606706/
So the files seem to be missing for two weeks at least.

Just that some folk here are big on DiskCopying files before Stuffing, that's all.

I'm wondering if 9.0.4 is safe because it didn't ship as part of Classic (and it is notoriously buggy, which is why anyone that can would want to upgrade).

"There is really no reason for them to do it"
Apart from Steve Jobs well known hostility to the OS.

Making the updaters for an "obsolete" OS unavailable except for "Export" is daft when they've been freely available for a decade or more. I think they are just trying to inconvenience people.

I'm working my way through the Apple 9.2.1 language disc, before I look for others.

I'm not responsible for the 3rd-party download links, and haven't been able to check what's been uploaded there (get a "The file you are trying to access is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later" from Megaupload).

Pity whoever made alterations to the pages while I was asleep didn't read this thread first. Please don't remove foreign language text from the foreign language updater pages, not everyone understands English. (The foreign language text is from Apple documentation, not my improvisations.)

I actually think you should put all of these under the same title.

Those looking for these updates will be able to find them even if they all are on the same page.

EDIT: Also, I had the same problem with Megaupload. I uploaded many things the last few days and at some point had that message for maybe half of my uploads but yesterday evening all but one were available for download.

I'm not going to put them on one page because the page would be too large when I've finished putting up everything I intend to put up.

I think with Megaupload it is if others are downloading it (and registered members get priority)

Based on prior history with Apple and OS 9 related downloads I don't think this download problem is a glitch.

Well, I didn't tell you to place all of your uploads on the same page but maybe you could put all language versions of the same update under the same title.

Of course it's up to you, I just dont wan't this page to become impossible to overview.

I have updated the pages to make better understanding. Remember, please use this title: Mac OS 9.x Updaters (language).

“I have updated the pages to make better understanding.”

I’d appreciate it if you DIDN’T actually.

“Remember, please use this title: Mac OS 9.x Updaters (language).”

I titled it so it wouldn’t get lost in all the machine specific CD installs, but I’ll modify it so "Mac OS" comes first.

“Well, I didn't tell you to place all of your uploads on the same page but maybe you could put all language versions of the same update under the same title.”

I thought about doing it that way (all 9.1 updates for all languages on one page) but the end result would look like a Tower of Babel when I’m finished so I’m going with all 9.x updaters for a particular language being on one page.

Re Megaupload
Was able to download the file yesterday. Not the file I’ve uploaded to MG, but appears to be a legitimate updater.

Regarding the uploads that exceed MG’s 40 MB download limit, I could e-mail the files to someone with a Megaupload account for them to upload (T-1000 perhaps?)

Yes of course I would like to do that. However, I do think that these files are way to big to e-mail too. Probably depends on your e-mail host's restrictions. I know I cannot send e-mail bigger than 20 MB.

I'll see if I can find a way round that....

Meanwhile, it seems the pulling of 9.1+ updaters WAS a parting gift from Steve.

Over on the official Apple OS 9 (& earlier) Support discussion forum - which I won't link to as I don't want to draw Apple's attention our way - the folk have been complaining to each other about missing OS 9 Updates.
So naturally they asked the person who monitors the discussion forum for Apple what was going on.

"Apple Support Communities Host said:

'Thank you for letting us know about this. I will investigate and see what can be done.' "

"Latest response from Apple on 17 October.

'I have sent this up the chain and got back a response saying it was being looked at. I'm sorry, that's all I know.' "
And he works for Apple.
Clearly it's not a matter of a few changed links or such like.

Despite the claim on it's website that all software released since January 1998 is available "from Apple Support Downloads" that hasn't been true for years as they've been purging OS 9 stuff. And at least as far as the Support and Downloads search engine is concerned, OS 9 is almost entirely gone (try it).

I will be doing something about making the larger files available once I've uploaded everything that is readily to hand (finished uploading what was on the 9.2.1 CD tonight). At least you know they are there.

For 9.x updates CD (official from Apple), please upload it to MediaFire. My ISP has blocked access to Megaupload, there are no way to download in this site for me and I will recommend MediaFire/Rapidshare.

Well, I guess that'll save me having to look for the 9.1 CD for a while. Do you mind if I ask the provenance of the CD, sheepshaver (i.e. where did you acquire it)? Just like to know before I upload any of the files to the Updater pages.

There's a list of Classic Mac Resources here: http://x704.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5623

and it includes several links where you can download Mac OS 9, 9.1, 9.1.2, and 9.2.2 for both North American English, and International English. So that's a start.

The Mac OS 9 updates for each language have not been removed from the Apple web site, but Apple has made the links non-functional for some reason. Even so, I have the 9.1, 9.2.1, and 9.2.2 updates for all 16 languages that Apple produced, so you can download them. See this page:

http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mac-os-9-updates-all-languages

I have been in touch with Apple HQ about restoring those links to working order, and they have done some things that would facilitate that, but the rest of it isn't in place yet.
