Old 68K stuff I can upload

Please pardon the inordinate amount of "Edutainment" games; my 3rd grade teacher let my mom order a bunch of "educator priced" games from Broderbund after we got our Performa 637CD in 1994...

• Startup/Restore disc for a Performa 637CD Money Magazine Special Edition, as well as all the bundled software from said Performa (random financial software, will maker, some weird atlas, etc)

• AMBER: Journeys Beyond -- From 1996, think of it as Myst meets Ghost Whisperer meets Mark Danielewski's "House of Leaves." So, puzzles, ghosts, and a haunting, mind warping storyline. (I'll personally be testing it in Sheepshaver shortly)

• Eyewitness Virtual Reality: CAT -- a multimedia cat museum. Lots of videos, great for kids and crazy cat ladies.

• Science Sleuths Vol 1: Mysteries of the Blob and the Exploding Lawnmowers -- Edutainment. Several levels of difficulty, but after you beat everything there isn't any real replay value.

• Kid Pix Studio -- 1995 version. Has some interesting premade "Moopies" including a WWII bomber that is about 2 miles from my house.

• The Amazing Writing Machine -- To quote the front cover "Inspire Kids to Write and Illustrate Their Own Books, Journals, Poems and More!" If my memory serves it lets you build some 90s-tastic short stories. Kinda fun.

• MS Fine Artist -- It's.... weird. It was Microsoft's version of Office for Kids... So kinda like Kid Pix without the cute Cairo stamps, zany backgrounds, or appealing, annoying sounds.

• Amazon Trail II -- Similar to the remake of Oregon Trail into "Oregon Trail II," Amazon Trail II has live action people, captured video animals, and a better trade-goods system. Only difference: you navigate your entire journey along the Amazon River on your way to Vilcabamba. Worth playing for the interaction with Cortez.

• Mayaquest Trail -- the only game in the "Trail" series I could never bring myself to seriously play. You have to bike - yes bike! - your way through the rainforests of central America on your journey throughout the ruins of Maya civilization. I could never get the hang of "balancing" my bike, so I gave up. Maybe you'll have better luck?

I've also got a few more Oregon Trail games (I think I had 4 versions of it that ran on my Performa!), and some random other stuff, including a few really awful Myst clones.

If anyone is interested in any of these items, let me know.

Hi Macgirl84. What are those 'few really awful Myst clones'? Sounds really intriguing… Smile

My favorites are:
Amazon Trail II
Amber
Mayaquest Trail

Also, Eyewitness Virtual Reality: CAT had an interesting description.

If you own original media, please use either Disk Copy to create disk images of them, or
if they comes as CD-ROM, Toast-like application to create .cdr (.toast) images.

If it is simply stored on the hard disk (w/o owning original media), please use Disk Copy 6.3 to create images of the content before uploading. Wink

Can you upload the Performa 637CD restore CD? Can you show the CD scan looks like?

The really awful Myst clones are "Jewels of the Oracle" and "The Crystal Key" -- both of which appear to be up here, amazingly enough...

I'm currently messing around trying to get AMBER to run in my 9.0.4 Sheepshaver; it looks like it needs a good number of tweaks to the extensions to get the videos to show... I know it can be done, I managed to get it running on my rev D iMac back in 2003-ish. I will document the settings too.

I'll start archiving software in earnest shortly; I have a week and a half left before my university lets out for break.

Any recommendations on places to host too large of files? AMBER is a 2 CD, and the rest are fairly large as well. I don't think Apple would appreciate it if I used my iDisk to host abandonware ^_^;;

MegaUpload seems to be a top site for uploads.
MediaFire is popular too.

RapidShare is used, but it's next to hopeless for downloading anything.

Any Mac abandonware gratefully received by the site.

Megaupload will yank uploaded files if no one downloads them often enough. Mediafire will let them stay up forever provided the account holder accesses their account from time to time. That's why I'm going with Mediafire. Here's hoping they don't go the way of other dot.com dinosaurs...

Oh, and Jewels of the Oracle isn't a bad Myst clone; it's more of a straight-up puzzle game with fancy graphics.

ADD: uploading to Mediafire has been a huge pain in the a-- however. I download and verify with md5 checksums and the uploads (usually the ones over 100MB) fail at least half the time. Once they are verified they seem to download properly the majority of the time. Of course I have a free account and I'm using the web to upload; maybe their paid proprietary uploading stuff works better.

Yeah, MegaUpload drop the files if no-one downloads them in 90 days. But by that time more than a few have downloaded the files and they would (should) be willing to upload them again.

I don't think we see MU / MF / RS as a permanent solution to the issue of large files, but it really does help circulate copies of Mac abandonware that might otherwise only be present on one computer.

I'm getting things uploaded slowly but surely. I'll have to hunt around for the Performa Startup/Restore disc, somehow it got separated from the rest of my old Mac stuff. As soon as I can locate it I'll get it uploaded...

AMBER is great. Thank you for sharing it with the site. Smile yeah, I have a brutal Myst clone "Alanna" or something sitting here. I think I tried it once. Pretty sure it was free with some magazine or something. hahaha

Sorry most of the games don't have screenshots; for some reason Webkit/Safari and the Garden don't get along, and I cannot stand how painfully slow Firefox is =\

I also have a bunch of old floppy based games, does anyone have recommendations for a Snow Leopard compatible USB floppy drive? Or know if Mac Classics running OS 6 play nicely with SCSI Zip drives? (My Performa's monitor died, so I can't use it to clone the floppies.)

whoa, macgirl84, which performa? Already sounds like we're born in the same year (84), enjoyed the same games and maybe used a similar machine? (Mine was 5260/120). Good times! Smile

SwedeBear, yes, that's the one! Smile

My Performa is a 637CD Money Magazine Special Edition that came from Sears, and was built on my tenth birthday. (Cue Twilight Zone music)

The only notable features of the 637CD are that they have DOS cards (never got a chance to use it), and a majority of them have the faulty 68LC040 logic boards. I still occasionally have nightmares about the programmer's box randomly popping up @_@ And so many times I had to reformat that little pain... It earned the name Performa of Doom, it really did...

At least your Performa was a PPC...

I've heard this will work if you install Iomega Driver v4.2 on the Classic.

or start your Zip before starting your Mac, as with external SCSI disks when they failed to auto mount. IIRC you can also use 'Mt Everything'(?) or something like that to mount your disks.

The SCSI zip drive is a relatively new acquisition; I managed to snag it off of Shopgoodwill.com (it kinda makes the sad stop from missing two eMates and a couple MessagePads). It came still in the original box and shrinkwrap, so as long as the floppy install disc still works I should be able to get the Classic and it to work together...

Oh the joy of getting computers from the early '90s to talk to their modern relatives....

Ooh, no doubt. The 5260/120 was actually rated multiple times as the worst Mac ever made, and I can really see why. It crashed constantly. Network traffic lagged the whole system bus. Even though it was a 120mhz processor, in some types of calculations the way the system architecture was designed, the effective processor speed was halved. Check out how horrible it was: http://lowendmac.com/roadapples/x200.shtml

Oh that note I just put an offer on a Mac LC on eBay - that was my first computer!! *crosses fingers*!!!

These may or may not work with your old floppies. Can you list what the games are? Those USB floppy drives generally won't read 800k disks and definitely won't read 400k's.

Yeah, those USB Floppy Drives works with HD floppy disks (1.4 MB) only.

I still own an Expansion Bay ZIP-Drive for PowerBook 190/3400 as a second-hand buy, which optionally replaces the built-in floppy drive, where I save my software acquisition I've to create with the PowerBook 190.

I think all the floppies in my possession (other than the ones that came with my latest "rescue" -- a 128k from August 1984) are 1.44MB disks--everything is from 1994 or newer.

I'm going to see about using the Zip drive to serve as a go between first, since I already have both SCSI and USB models in my possession. It'll take a little while before I can mess with it, my 68k Mac collection is currently in a disarray ^_^;;
