I have had a Iomega Jaz drive for years, it was given to my and it was hardly used. It is the external version but it has the SCSI 2 connectors on the back and I never bought a cable or adapter to use it to this day. Therefore it has just sat in a box. However, I ran across it today and realized I could crack it open and simply make it an internal drive because the actual interface is a narrow 50 pin.

Since I am currently short on hard drives I'm going to see if I can make this a boot drive for the IIcx just for the heck of it. It's not a speedy drive but lets face it, who would notice on a IIcx anyway? I would think that Iomega had Zip tools for the Zip drive, the must have had Jaz tools for the Jaz drive? Back to the research......if someone here may have the appropriate software for it please let me know. I didn't get software for the Jaz when it was given to me and two 2gig discs for it. Thanks!

If you want to use it as a boot disk you can probably get away with just formatting it using a hacked copy of Apple HD SC Setup (the usual version will only format Apple-branded drives). I did this with a zip disk and could boot my SE/30 from it.

I have done similar things with a jazz drive to Protocol 7. I have a 1gb drive and have used it as a boot disk. I have even used it as a CD duplicate. I used a unix system to dump an iso image to a disk, and my mac was able to read it. I used it to install A/UX. I know there was a tools disk that came with the drive, I erased mine years ago. I'll look to at Iomega's site to see if they still have it up.

is a link to the support for the 2gb disk. It says the driver is for mac os 8 and above, but if I remember correctly that version worked on system 7.

the hacked HD SC setup should do it, i know if i leave a zip disk in my 8600 on reboot it gets seen an a hdd, the disc's may even already be formatted, assuming they where branded for mac (if not they will be in pc format)

Would you happen to have a hacked version of Apple HD SC Setup? I also want to thank all of you for the quick responses!! Very impressive!

The only issue I had is that I formatted the disc on the G4 with MacOs Extended format from force of habit. When I put it in the beige machine it seen it with HDSC Setup but said there was a problem with it. I put it back in the F4 and did MacOS Standard and it works like a charm. Loaded the OS on it right from the CD, rebooted and she's running great off of the Jaz drive. Didn't even need Jaz tools. Sweet! Not a huge challenge but even a minor victory is a victory.

Okay, I spoke too soon. I launched what I thought was a system 7 program and it was an 6 program and it bombed on me and killed the disk from booting again. Have to start from scratch LMAO. Meh....it was cool for a couple hours anyway. It was rather weird and cool to see Apple's At Ease again. I totally forgot about that from the Centris days.

Hi MacNut,
I've never used a Jaz drive, but my understanding of it is that you just need the appropriate version of the Iomega driver for the Mac OS to handle it and then format it as a normal removable disk. You'll probably need a tool like FWB HD-Toolkit. Anubis Charismac is also good.

It is working again, after the program crashed it caused me to have to re-bless the System Folder. It was a quick fix. All has been well since. Although it's removable, until I can get a regular SCSI drive it's found it's home as the hard drive wannabe for the meantime.

I remember making boot disks from Zip Disks for fun when I was younger. I would expect it to work similarly for Jaz Disks.

Some external SCSI drive as startup volume is a good workaround.
I still have my Syquest555 drives that could boot my MacII from a 40MB cartridge.
Those cartridges were also useful for carrying files between Mac/Amiga/PC or home/office, back in the days of yonder.
