Need original disks for PB G4

I need to get hold of original CDs to set up my PowerBook G4. It currently runs Tiger but needs 9.2.2 to run some of my apps in Classic. I've included this info string because I need CDs that were produced specifically for this computer.

Machine Name: PowerBook G4 15"
Machine Model: PowerBook3,5
CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (3.2)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
Memory: 256 MB
Bus Speed: 133 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.5.3f2
Serial Number: QT244CM2N4L

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

I think this will work for you:

MacTracker tells about this Mac "Mac OS X 10.2.1 and Mac OS 9.2.2", so this should work.

And I can get the definitive Classic folder for you, it won't boot your PB into OS9, but it is the OS9.2.2 that shipped with all PPC Macs that couldn't boot OS9. If you're JUST going to use it for Classic, it'll work.

Just choose a language. US English ? or International English ? or another ?

Bertyboy, if you mean that Classic installer DVD you have, I'm pretty sure the OS9 installations on that are bootable on OS9-bootable machines.

I'm not so sure. There are a large number of extensions missing. I have the UK English version on my dual G5, it has no video drivers, no network control panels or extensions (AppleTalk, Modem, TCP/IP, etc.), no CD/DVD extensions, no FireWire extensions. Maybe it will boot though.

I'd upload the archive, but the OP is running OSX 10.4 with only 256MB RAM (ouch) so I suspect they may wish to boot into OS9 instead.

Ah I think you're right about it being minimal. I'm sure I installed one onto an iBook here and it booted it, but thinking back there may have been stuff missing alright. The netboot image would be a better choice I guess.

I'll try it, but I have my doubts. On the Apple Support forum, I was told I had to have original disk for this particular PB. Thanks, and I'll let you know if it works.

jerrysgirl,

If you want to boot OS9 on your PowerBook G4, then you need the original discs, or maybe something similar from a later G4 Mac. Original discs would be the best, and easiest, to get working. It's one of the very last PowerBook G4's to be able to boot OS9, but I'm sure we could get something that would work.

If you JUST want to run OS9.2.2 in Classic under OSX 10.4, then I can help you, with the aforementioned Classic Installer DVD. I can upload the OS9.2.2 Classic installer in any language you desire, I'm guessing US English or International English, just let me know which (or another if you prefer) and I'll upload it.
It comes as an OSX installer package - this was how OS9.2.2 was installed on all Macs after the OSX 10.2 release.

Vitoarc, YOU ROCK! I did indeed get my 9.2.2 Classic installed using your files! I was told it couldn't be done on the Apple Communities Forum but I simply downloaded the (unblessed) folder to my desktop, removed all the contents from my 9.1 System Folder (which was blessed) and trashed them, then I dragged the contents of your file into it and restarted. I can open most of my old apps and docs now! Thank you SOOOOO much! I have one question, though. I have a couple of apps that tell me they cannot open in Classic (like IomegaWare and Norton Utilities) but they won't open in 10.4.1 either, and always prompt Classic, which then says the app was not made to open in Classic. Any thoughts?

I'm really glad you had success jerrysgirl but I can't take credit for the 9.2.2 Classic folder, I only pointed you in the right direction. Smile

It's great being able to use many (but not all) of you old programs from Mac OS isn't it? I have a PowerBook G4 as well and run Classic all the time. Quite a few games on this site will play both within Classic as well as emulators. However, as you've seen, some applications will *not* open in Classic and there is nothing that can be done about it. The architecture will not allow for it.

However, there is a solution. Emulation. Depending upon the app, you can either use Basilisk or Sheepshaver which are the popular choices by many here (there are others out there but these are the main two used for System 7 and up). So if you run Basilisk, you should be able to run 99% of any program you want from the old OS days. Case in point: Canvas. It refused to run in Classic mode for me, but runs fine in Basilisk.

I'm not sure why you want to run Norton Utilities but I wouldn't recommend it. Do you have a need for this utility? Your PB will emulate all of your programs and games more than adequately without Norton and running Norton sounds a bit risky.

As far as running IomegaWare, that *should* run under emulation, but I can't confirm that http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/iomegaware-35

Basilisk will recognize a mounted volume such as a CD, but it will not recognize a USB or USB/floppy drive. I'm not sure if Sheepshaver recognizes USB or Firewire. But mounting a volume under emulation is not necessary anyway. When you run emulation, you have a shared folder created between the emulator and OSX, so anything that OSX sees, you can access it under emulation.
