Mac OS bootable flash drive?

I've got the original Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 8100 Series Disk, along with System 7.5 Update 2.0 Disk from my PPC 7100.

*** Does anyone know if it would be possible to install System 7.5 on a flash drive, using my PowerBook G4? ***

I know there's a way to put OSX on a flash drive and make it bootable:

http://tech.bradbergeron.com/guides/howto-install-and-boot-os-x-on-a-fla...

but I'm wondering if it were possible with Mac OS. I spent a few hours trying to figure this out but I've given up, figuring I'm wasting my time.

I don't think you can install Mac OS 7.5 in the USB flash drive, it will not work unless it's bundled with the emulator such as Basilisk II, Mini vMac or SheepShaver.

Hey, you have the System 7.5 Update 2.0 CD, can you upload to megaupload?

I might could. Smile

I thought we already had System 7.5 here. Will it really make any difference if 7.5 Update 2 is uploaded?

I'm going to have to get educated on emulators. I know nothing about them, but I do know that I've been having a lot of fun with Classic since I found this site. Smile

System 7.5 Update 2.0 is not uploaded in this site. Feel free to upload the CD to megaupload.

Sure. Sharing is what's it's all about, and I see you've done your share here.

I knew I saw 7.5... LOL that was you that put all those floppies up... I just tonight ordered an external USB floppy for my G4. Once I get the drive I'm going to import the diskettes of Canvas 3.5 and upload that.

I'll work on getting the 7.5 U2 CD uploaded soon if not sooner.

Cheers.

What is the part number and version of your Power Macintosh 6100/7100/8100 CD? I think the version 3.0 (691-0539-A) has been available.

Ah, version 2.0. Can you upload to megaupload and update this to add links for version 2.0?

Been there, tried all that many, many years ago with OS9 and USB flash drives and PCMCIA cards (with 1GB CF card installed). In both cases, in OS9, I could reformat to HFS+, and install OS9.2.2, even select the devices in the Startup Disk control panel, but they would never boot.
It was all a moot point anyway as I could easily boot OS9.2.2 and OSX 10.3 of my old iPod over Firewire.

Those older macs can't boot from USB like they could from SCSI. It wasn't until FireWire came along that "Target Disk" mode enabled something like that. Pretty sure lowendmac.com has information about it.

sheepmyshaver: Can I compress the toast image of the CD with Stuffit? Beginners uploading guide here says to use MacZip, but that won't work for me. Or should I just upload the locked .toast file?

Thanks for the replies about the flash drive. Much appreciated.

Now back to the off topic topic. Smile

The Version 2 CD has been uploaded to Mega and I've linked to it here as requested.

Can you replace and re-upload the CD image of your PowerMac CD? The Desktop DB has been modified and it's not the HFS partition, it's the HFS+ partition and CDFS partition, so it won't readable in Classic Mac OS except OS 8.1 or later. Please follow the link here: http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/do-not-let-the-newly-uploaded-cd-image-.... Use Apple Disk Copy 6.3.3 or older versions of Toast to create untouched CD images as Read-only, not compressed read-only.

OK, I am pretty sure though that it was read only, and not compressed read only with Toast. The compression happened with Stuffit.

I'll try again. But it will take a few days.

When creating Mac CD-ROMs, please make sure to check the 'HFS standard' option in Toast, which is mostly located within the 'Options' left bottom corner of the Toast window.
Just to prevent the image being a HFS+ CD-ROM.

When creating a toast image of an existing CDROM what shouldn't have to deal with filesystems at all.

Choose "Disk Copy" from the format menu. Cick on the Data button and select the CD drive. Then from the file menu pick "save as disc image". This images the whole disc including any PC partitions that may be on it. It won't handle CD audio though.

If the disc just contains a HFS(+) volume then another option is to choose "Mac Volume" from the format menu. Again, click on the Data button and select the volume in the CD drive. Uncheck "Don't copy free space" (all 4 options should be unchecked). Click OK and then choose "save as disc image" from the file menu.

That's what the directions for uploading to this site (Beginners Guide) indicates as well.

Yes 7.5 is coming. I am waiting on your "blessing" of my 6-7-8100 upload. Wink

You gotta remember, I'm new to copying system software and Mac emulation, so I want to make sure I am doing it correctly before I go off half cocked. Smile
