Mac OS Anthology 1999 Edition

In 1999, Apple introduced the anthology of all Mac OS releases consist of System 7.0-Mac OS 8.5.1 (excludes 7.5.1 and 7.5.2) (disc 1-4) during the May 1999 WWDC Keynote to aid registered third party developers in testing their software for compatibility. . It was revised two times by adding Mac OS 8.6 (disc 5-6, September 1999 revision) and then Mac OS 9 (disc 7-8, February 2000 revision). It was came on the DVD format.

Edit: There also the Mac OS Anthology 2001, which includes everything as 1999 edition, and also includes Mac OS 9.0.4, Mac OS 9.1, and Mac OS X 10.0 system releases in total of 10 discs. If someone who has this set, please upload it!

More information: http://web.archive.org/web/20001110222600/http://developer.apple.com/pro...

How to use it: In order to use this anthology, you need to use Mac OS 8.1 or later and install Joliet File System v2.1b5 with UDF Volume Access v1.0.4, then you can access the contents, even you are running in Basilisk II or SheepShaver (tested Disc 1 of the part) Hurray!

Warning: Some of the Mac OS installers inside this anthology cannot be completed or installed sucessfully. This because of bad creation date (for example the Mac OS 7.6.1 disk images could not get QuickDraw GX installer finished because of creation date mismatch than the retail CD) and missing diskette images. To fix this, you must copy all of the contents of the disk image to the hard disk, open the installer script that cannot be completed using ResEdit inside the Software Installers folder, check the infs resource, check the ID, and in the Creation Date, type 0. Save it and then try installing them.

Regarding the seeds, sometimes people use seed boxes and you can have amazing download speeds (500 kbs) with just a few seeders.

Do I hit megaupload with this when I'm finished downloading ?

It's more like 3.7KB/s. If I torrent 24/7 I'll be finished about December 19th. followed by another 17 days and nights of uploading to MU.

Well bertyboy if it's that slow maybe a few of us could get together on downloading selective pieces of the entire torrent. If someone downs 3-4 each and ignores the other files in the torrent, he'd be done a whole lot quicker than trying to down the entire thing at once. Many torrent clients allow you to select what files you want to download.

At least nobody has to download 7.5.5 because I've already got it.

Trouble is there's only 8 files in the torrent: 8 zipped DVDs. The speed might pick up though. Also it seems as if all the System 7 stuff is on the first disc. After that it's 8.x to 9.0.

I'd never dare try download something that big over torrent though. I'm patient, but only to a point Smile

No, because the Disc 1 uses the ISO 9660 and UDF file system. It cannot be mounted 100% in Joliet File System for Mac OS 9 version 2.1b5 because the session is damaged. All of the content inside is not damaged. So how to use it?

Have you tried burning it to a DVD or mounting it in a virtual drive? Sheepshaver treats isos like hard disks so UDF would likely be a problem.

Protocol 7, I don't test it. My suggestions to use this DVD is to use Joilet File System v2.0.3 with UDF Volume Access v1.0.4 or Joilet File System v2.1b5 with UDF Volume Access v1.0.4.

I've tried them in Basilisk II with Mac OS 8.1 with Joilet File System v2.1b5 and UDF Volume Access v1.0.4, then it works 100%, yeah! In order to mount images, just move them to the hard disk. Here is the proof:

Torrent download took 6 days. Now that it's finished, I detected a problem:

# unzip -t Mac\ OS\ Anthology\ \'99\ Disk\ 2.cdr.zip
Archive: Mac OS Anthology '99 Disk 2.cdr.zip
warning [Mac OS Anthology '99 Disk 2.cdr.zip]: 4294967296 extra bytes at beginning or within zipfile

testing: Mac OS Anthology '99 Disk 2.cdr
error: invalid compressed data to inflate
At least one error was detected in Mac OS Anthology '99 Disk 2.cdr.zip.

All other archives are fine.
I tested the torrent integrity with my torrent client and it reports all blocks are okay.

Is the ZIP for disc 2 currupt?

According to the comments you have to extract it using the built-in OS X unzipping tool. It contains some hack to handle zip files over 4gb in size.

I wouldn´t mind DiskCopy img files. The ´99 Anthology would be among the most important items on MG,
I believe. D-9.0 (German) would be very welcome, and its not just me.
If you have the DVD image, could you please tell us a working link?

The working links are the Mitrokhin's Wired Server (don't know down or not) or BETAArchive.com.

Yes, you posted that.
It seems there is a problem with Mitrokhin's and the beta admins just don't seem to want me to access the archives. I'll give up. Maybe someone else is luckier.

Would be great, if you could upload the ´99 DVD image to your Mediafire place.
Many users will be really thankful for easily accessable files.

Thats great news.
Are you planning to upload the others as well?
Disk7 would be a nice addition, the older OS´s are pretty well represented in my opinion.

what would be best to compress them with?, stuffit won't do it as sit, so it's either rar, zip (tho some disks might be too big for zip), or sitx

Many, many thanx for your efforts processing the Anthology, Max.
For me, anything that can be inflated with the Unarchiver would do fine.
For those who do not have a OSX system, RAR might be more versatile.
Looking forward for your proceedings!
