Help! I'm running OS 8.6 on iMac Bondi Blue

I've downloaded a game that's a .zip file and I expanded it using Stuffit Expander which made it into a .hqx file. When I click on it I get a message reading..." The document could not be opened, because the application program that created it could not be found". I thought that I wouldn't have to download an emulator because i'm already running OS 8.6 on my computer....someone please help me and explain to me how to run the game!

Thank You

I sometimes run into errors like that due to a file extension not being properly mapped to Stuffit. Try dragging the .hqx file onto the Stuffit Expander icon. That may do the trick for you.

So the game is Age of Empires, and when I did what you said I should try, an application opened to update the game to version 1.3.1... But when I tried to install the update, it could't find the game file

Perhaps you were trying to expand the game updater program? I'm trying to think what I could suggest... It may have most likely expanded more than just the updater file, and if not, look for additional .sit or .hqx files in the .zip folder. I may try this myself in a few minutes...

Thank you, and do you have the same computer I have? Or at least the same OS?

And I double-clicked the updater, I didn't use it with Stuffit Expander.

I'm sending this message on a G3 iBook running Mac OS 9.2.2 using Stuffit Expander 7... which reminds me. IIRC, you may need Stuffit 7 to open .zip files, which could be why you are running into the error.

I tried downloading Stuffit Expander 7 but it gave me .mis file that won't open.

Is there somewhere on the internet I can get the app?

I just realized the problem. You may have clicked on the "download" button at the top of the AOE page instinctively and that is the download for JUST the updater. Scroll down a bit further in the description and you will see links to the game and CD audio disk images, which are what you want to download. Normally, the download button links to the entire game, but because the maximum file size was recently capped to 100MB in preparation for a server upgrade, many of the newer post-1997 games have been moved to other sites (such as megaupload or rapidshare).

Oh! I see. The 100MB cap is unfortunate, do you think AoE for my mac would be on rapid share(.com?) or megaupload(.com?)

Thanks

AOE is on megaupload.

CD Audio: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=2OXCQ430

You may have to burn the disc image onto a blank CD, as I have discovered myself, which could be more trouble than its worth on your old iMac, though, unless your iMac shipped with a CD burner or you have spare USB burner lying around.

I unfortunately don't have a burner, but can I download the files on my white macbook running 10.6.2 and burn it on a CD from there and use it on my iMac G3?

That should work, as long as your cd burning program can read .toast files.

...and if it can't, just install the trial version of toast titanium 10 on your macbook and burn with that: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Toast-Titanium.shtml

Generally, I use Roxio Toast Titanium, both in Mac OS 9 and X, to open / burn .toast files, because that is the program that they are created in.

I see, and I should burn both the game file and CD Audio file to 2 CDs?

And what kind of CDs do I use? I've never burned something like this.

Believe it or not, you can open both files, one at a time, and burn them onto a single "mixed mode" disc. As for what kind of disc, any old CD-R or CD-RW should do the trick.

How do I got about burning a "mixed mode" disc using a CD-R(W) from the two .toast files?

Thank you

Also, the game file ends with .sit, that can still be burned? And the audio CD file also ends with .sit?

They can be burned?

I'm not extremely familiar with Toast 10, myself, but if it's anything like Toast 5, you should be able to open up Toast, drag both .toast files onto the toast window and press the big red button on the lower-right corner (you may have to hold option to burn a mixed mode CD) to begin burning.

The .sit extension is because the .toast files were compressed with stuffit expander so that they would take up less space and thus be faster to download on the internet. Just extract them with stuffit expander on the macbook (you may have to download stuffit if you don't have it already) and you should be left with the .toast files.

The link for the trial version of Roxio Toast Titanium 10 doesn't have a download link on the site, is there somewhere else I can download the trial?

Interesting... I've done a bit more research and it appears as if Apple's Disk Utility may be able to burn .toast images. Granted, it probably can't burn mixed mode images, but if you'd be willing to live without the background music it would be at least worth a try.

No luck finding a Mac OS X-compatible toast trial, though.

So I found the Toast trial via a link from a youtube video, and now I need some help burning it...
So first should I download stuffit expander for my macbook and expand the two .sit files?
Then I drag them both into Toast under what in data...Mac Only, DVD ROM UDF, or ISO 9660?

Then click red button?

Thank You

I think Dragnerok X deserves a gold medal for his patience and understanding in this matter. I'm suprised you haven't been asked how to turn an iMac on.

Burning CD is good, but you could try just mounting the disc image in a version of Toast suitable for OS8.6 on your iMac. Now let me see, where would you find an old (abandonware) version of Toast like that ?
Can't promise it'll work but you could at least try.

Unfortunately, as I had discovered earlier, AOE happens to one of the few games that requires a physical disc in the drive to play, where a disk image simply won't suffice. I suppose, in theory, it *might* be doable with a CD master image from Disk Copy 6.4/6.5, but then you'd have to run it without the CD audio.

Has anyone tried this to mount the Toast image for Age of Empires?

It's pretty good at fooling copy protection for games that check for the CD.

No disrespect bertyboy, I think you have no right to make assumptions... I've been using Mac for several and i'm very knowledgeable with current Apple software and hardware.

I've recently bought the Bondi Blue iMac out of curiosity to how Apple used to be, but I have no idea how to to use it or use the OS it hosts. It has OS 8.6 on it and i'm still trying to figure things out. I thank Dragnerok X for being so patient and helping me understand more about the computer I recently acquired.

And I will continue to ask more questions about that Mac and it's software no matter how rudimentary the question may be.

bertyboy, i'm not trying to be rude but i'm stern in not making assumptions and I wish others would too.

Thank you again Dragernok X

The virtual CD utility mentioned may do the trick, but from experience I can tell you that NO TOOL EXISTS for Mac OS 8/9 that will mount a mixed mode disk image. Either you will be able to mount *just* the game, without CD audio, or have to burn a disc.

I've found out how to burn a Mixed Mode CD using Roxio Toast 10, all I need to do is find some blank CD-R data disks and i'll try it out.

Downloading the 800KB update for AoE, expecting it to be the full game was not a good start. The AoE page does clearly state that you need to download the game from MegaUpload, and that the download link is just the update. It also tells you how to find the notes on burning the two CD parts to a single disc for playing the game.
I'll stop there. Everything you need to know is there, on the pages you're downloading stuff from, you just need to read the help that someone has taken the effort and time to produce. Same for the uploads, someone has taken the time, effort and expense to purchase the software, create an image, find the requirements, find the patches, sometimes scan the manuals, package it up and upload it.

In your defence, there are very few games as tough as AoE to get working from the disc images provided. Where someone else has already gone to the effort of trying to get it to work, keeping detailed notes and publishing them on the site, they would appreciate the effort to read them.

Still, if you're even just a little more savvy in the ways of OS8.6 and the hassles involved with AoE (and there are a few other games like this too), it's all been worth it.

ok i'm not sure i understand everything on this thread but i have a (k)d version of this game with audio. i'm guessing it's a stripped down version of the full game because it's 69 megs in size and the demo is only 16 megs plus it plays without any cd in the drive. i haven't played much of it but it saves and loads ok. would this be of any use or am i way off-topic here?

Mmm, 69MB sounds like the full installed game (102MB) minus the Movies folder (start of game, wonders built, etc).
