Flashing mac icon and ? at startup on lombard 400mhz with os 9.2.2 Re-bless drive?

I have a g3 lombard 400mhz. It has OS 9.2.2 installed. It was working fine until my husband tried to boot from our os 9.2.2 cd, which has a rather sizable scratch. The disk did not boot up and will not reboot to hard drive. I have tried to hold down the d key when booting to force it to boot to drive, it will not. I think all it needs is to have the drive re blessed, but I no longer have a working cd. Is there a download on the site (or does someone have a cd image) that I can burn to launch the disk utility to rebless the drive? I do not have another mac, so I need to have something I can burn on windows to use on my mac. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I haven't done it with that particular system, but I do have an iMac G4 and a powerbook g3 wallstreet. I used the emac 9.2.2 image on the site here. I burned it from a windows machine no problem. If you have problems with it, try burning again with the speed set the slowest it can go. From what I have read, that seems to be the biggest cause of problems.

Bummer, didnt work. Seems like none of my keyboard commands are responding. Wont boot to disk which was burned at 1x speed. Held c to boot cd. Nothing happened. Not sure what to do next. I feel like I am loosing a good friend...any other ideas of what might be causing this?

I had a Lombard 333MHz and I still have images from the original discs, I could put them up, you could burn (a good idea to have copies of original media around too). I'll dig them out and upload tonight.

If you download them, how do you burn them ?

I just mean for you to boot from the Install disk (OS 8.6), start the Startup Disk control panel and select the internal drive - which I think appears to be your only problem - the PRAM dorsn't know which disk to boot from.

You could try booting holding down Option - it's an OS X thing, but it's not going to hurt to try.

A PRAM reset will probably also work fine. Just hold down Command + Option + P + R after you hear the startup sound, release the keys once you hear that sound for the second time.

I'd already uploaded my Lombard Install CD, you may want to grab it anyway - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AYEKLN3R

If bertyboy's 333 Mhz restore CD does not work on your 400 Mhz machine try the G3 recovery CD on this site:

It is weird that the CDs you tried so far did not work. I have tested the 9.2.2 emacs CD on a 333 Mhz Lombard. It boots and installs fine. I burned it with 4x speed. I have also tested the g3 recovery CD. Works also fine. Also burned with 4x speed.

Did you take care that you did not mount the CD images before burning? I order to get a bootable CD from an image the image needs to be untouched and, if possible, locked.

Thanks guys. I will give these a try. I burn using Nero software. Is there a better method that may work?

Maybe the problem is the fact that I have a dvd drive or that I am burning to dvd r...just a thought.

Why not just start with resetting the PRAM?

Absolutely yes. I have done that many times with ImgBurn on Windows boxes.

If you have problems burning a bootable Mac CD on Windows you can try a Linux Live CD for PPC. A good one which works fine and not too slow on a Lombard is Hardy Heron Desktop CD:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/8.04/release/
This CD recognizes USB sticks so that you can boot from the Linux CD and repair the HD from a stick with Mac OS.
