External file sharing servers?

One of the very few limitations of the Garden seems to be the missing storage capability for big files.
I decided for Mediafire, because I liked the interface and because I was not bothered with too much commercials.
Recently one of my files (or more?) on my 70GB MF storage got lost for unknown reasons.
This is not a big thing, as I have the original media of course, but it is a bit disturbing.
What are your experiences and recommendations about free online file servers?
Megaupload, DropBox, Rapidshare or else?

In all my use of MediaFire I have only had several problem files, all of which I was able to fix by re-uploading. And lately I have had no problems at all; I check my archives periodically and find nothing missing.

However, I do not recommend uploading large files unless you have a fast enough connection to do it in a relatively short time. The longer the upload takes, the more likely it is to fail. This is generally true for other services too.

The feature that really sold me on MediaFire is that I can keep all my things in a public directory that anyone can browse or search.

Yes thats a big plus for Mediafire.
The lost file I was talking about, had been downloaded 27 times previously.
Max1zzz had some queer behaviour with the Anthology `99 Disk5 part 4 too.
If only few files get damaged occasionally, its certainly acceptable for a free service.

I used Mediafire to create the Macintosh archive. Some files are mirrored from PowerPup, MCP, 24bit, max1zzz, and others. Here are my stats:

Total Storage Used: 77.67 GB
Total Downloads Served: 29,584
Est. Bandwidth Served: 1.53 TB

One of the files has been lost because I got an email from Account services: Mac OS 7.6 German CD, Norton AV 8.0 German CD, System 7 Pro 7.1.1 disk images
...but one of the files magically lost, so I don't check everything of my archive.

There are other services out there. But Mediafire is one of the few that doesn't have a "File storage time" limit on their free account.

My archive is relatively new compared to the others. So I guess it isn't large enough yet to start experiencing file losses.

Nice collection still, PowerPup.
Using MF for a longer time, one might feel the need for copying some items to his personal archive for further investigation. The bad thing here is, that files are not actually copied (as one might think), but LINKED to the original upload. If something goes wrong with the original, youre done.

I'm using Rapidshare, for better or for worse. It has a fairly unintuitive & difficult to use interface for uploading files which can change suddenly, as they upgrade their site often and without warning.

On the upside, they allow fairly large multiple uploads of up to 500 MB each for free users and you can make them permanent with a simple config rule in your file manager area.

Downloading from Rapidshare is a test in patience if you're a free user. Mediafire is the best I've come across to DL from if you are an unregistered free user. It has the shortest wait time and has a distinct lack of in-your-face ads. I should probably register and use them, too.

The worst these days IMHO is Megaupload. It is just horrible to use if you DL for free, with constant flash animation and pop-up-redirects to gambling sites always in your face.

I use Multiupload. That way all my eggs are not in one basket.

Megaupload is one of the best for free but you have to use ad/popup blockers. That's just the price of using the modern innernets.

Multiupload, hm? Looks interesting.
Are the uploads stored redundantly in several places or just on ONE server whichever MU picks?

if anyone is interested in something for small files or permanent storage I am happy to create some web storage accounts on my server (either sub accounts on my server or through a different ports effectively giving you your own server)

I'm really looking for something to use up my server, so if anyone wants some file accounts or web hosting contact me

Thanks all for your contributions.
This is the answer I got from MF about my file that could suddenly not been downloaded no more:
"Hello,
This file no longer exists on our servers. It cannot be made available for download.
Best Regards,
Charlie
The MediaFire Team"

I've busy doing my lifetime jobs in my life, and here is the latest stats for my archive:

Total Storage Used: 77.61 GB (now reduced several MBs because low download priority)
Total Downloads Served: 30,340
Est. Bandwidth Served: 1.65 TB

And from now on, I don't have access to Megaupload anymore because my connection has blocked the Megaupload site forever, and I cannot download files from Megaupload anymore (mostly Bob Kiwi, 24bit, and others posted MU links).
