Cost of hosting site

I saw on the main site that it costs $150 to host the site including bandwidth. Does that include the cost or people downloading games too? Or is that separate?

What I'm trying to get at is, wouldn't it be cheaper to host just the downloads on megaupload with a lifetime premium account? I know the drawback is that not EVERYONE in the world can download from there and that not EVERYONE can upload their files to there except the person who created the account. I'm just saying, wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run?

MegaUpload can remove files whenever they wish, and have done so in the past. We are working on getting new hosting and the cost should drop drastically soon.

in my case the reason I upload files to MegaUpload, is because, I cannot upload big files to macintoshgarden due to the "http://error stuff...."
yesterday I tried twice to upload flashbackCD and after waiting 2 hours uploading
it gave me that error, so I had to do it the way I did and restart all over again,
the same happened with Office 98 days before.

Well I actually didn't create the topic cause other people were having trouble uploading stuff here. It's just that I saw a lot of people removing music files from awesome games to minimize the size of the file. It's not like I'm complaining, just wanted to show a cheaper alternative without restrictions. I love this site =)

I'm trying to find out WHY the upload issues take place. This should be fixed by the time we move to a larger server.

Do you think there'll be an increase to the maximum file size, or a different approach to bigger files altogether ? I have some very rare titles, ie. Stupid Invaders, it's on 4 cds. that would be a must.
Even if I just emailed you a list of what I have and FTP'd your choices up to one of your servers.
I have a lot of stuff, but until now just been considering pre-G3 stuff as abandonware.

Not pushing you for a definite answer, so "Maybe" or "Unlikely" or "We'll see how the new server works out" as an answer is fine.

From the very beginning of the site creation process
I told Maedi he should add something like Google Ads to the site.
Now, I think, the site is small enough to place them, say, to the right side of the site.

Such things should donate a bit of bandwith costs, at least.

How about charging $1.00 Dollar a Month per member?, to anyone who wants to download great software,
it's ONLY $12.00 a year and we get ALL this software! what a bargain!..
( Probably a lot of users may want to hang me for this...Shock )

...But if you are looking for solutions, I remember Balrog saying that we are about 600 registered users, and even with 1/3 of us, at $1 dollar each a month per member should cover for the hosting expenses and solve technical problems,

and You don't need a credit card to have a PayPal account
(I have one and I don't have Credit cards)

but even if the members don't want a Paypal account, in the States is a lot easier to pay for stuff and services with the money-orders and the Unmatched world class Postal service,
(believe me, I wish we had that ruthless efficiency of services here in Mexico)

I lived many years and graduated in California and I know how everything works in the U.S.
so honestly, I don't think there are excuses for not paying ONE SINGLE DOLLAR.

as I said, this is just another option, but in the end, this is the ONLY way to keep macintoshgarden
independent and ALIVE!

- Cheer up, Amigos! .............And break a buck Smile

Unfortunately not everyone had money, and we don't want this to be a members-only site; also, charging may very well cause legal issues.

We're going to move to a new server soon, and these issues should be mitigated.

Thanks Balrog,
ok then allow me to mention these Web Hosts,
Which I think are worth checking out,
I have my own Web-site and it is hosted by http://000webhost.com
they even allow me to host my Music and It's Totally free no catch and No ads,
but I choose to put a few banners to help them out, and the paid packages are really good..
this is my site if you want to check it out: http://www.euryale.hostei.com/
(it's in Spanish)

and this one http://www.dot5hosting.com/
I have a friend who says good things about the service and prices are really good.

Well, we need something that provides full server access ... basically a VPS (virtual private server) or semi-dedicated server. We've got one in mind that isn't too expensive.

you should use a webbynode (webbynode.com) to host the main portion of the site and host files in amazon's S3.

i could help out with the migration, im a software engineer and systems admin. email me.

Unfortunately that would not help. S3 is what's so expensive. We're going to switch to different hosting though.

Why not use Dreamhost? I have been using them for years. They have pretty good deals on space and bandwidth:

http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html

Disk space: Unlimited TB
Bandwidth: Unlimited TB

For less than $10 a month.

Euryale, myself and I guess anyone else uploading at present gets those same errors. I've found that if you post a comment to your upload and place a link following this format:
http://macintoshgarden.org/sites/macintoshgarden.org/files/apps/"your_uploads_filename"
That link will work... and after a while, like up to 2 weeks or if there is a big crash with the Garden site, then the proper official DL will become active once the Garden gets back up.

But in the meantime, the link following the above format covers it. Don't know about large file sizes tho', mine have been quite small to date.
