Can we list spammers here for the mods/admins to deal with?

Just a thought; rather than searching each and everyone new reply here could we list the spammer here for the benefit of erasing them and their replies? Would it be of any use for the admin rather than point them out in the actual thread?

Yeah, i just noticed him, very annoying! I think that this thread is a good idea Smile .
I sure hope they don't have to turn of the comments + forum like they had to with the old site.
Thank Goodness that we have admins/mods to deal with them.
Oh yeah, kind of off topic, how about an update on the transition to a new server, balrog.

On the old site, no admin was available in old site's last months (or years?) ,
and Dax and me, we only was able to watch, nothing more.

drew hause seems to be going to every game and app in order and writing a comment that say something like "_______ Looks fun and exciting" or "Thanks for the information about _____"
What i always say, once a spammer/troll always a spammer/troll.
Do you guys/gals think that this person is a spammer or a person with a disorder?(no offense Wink -couldn't think of a better word)
EDIT: He is a spammer, take a look at macgarden's home page.
I Say he should have his account deleted!

Sort of expecting these talents to show up in this thread too. Mainly because of sharing thoughts of their expected age and maturity with nmz502 and bertyboy.

maybe on the new Mac Garden the admins can implement a system where users can flag a posting or a user and if e. g. five users flagged it as "spam", it gets automatically deleted?

That way it's not all depending on the admins and we could get rid of those spammers rather quick? (same goes for article vandalism)

But what do you do if spammers use the five vote device to kick out regular members? By using five diifferent IP adresses from five different internet cafes, and five different web based email accounts one person can act like five members! The same is true if you try to delete spammers' accounts. They just open up a new one with no problems. I also can imagine that they take any action by admins as a challenge to enforce their spamming activities. Some people just like war. Maybe the best way to deal with spammers is to ignore them so that they loose interest.

Ignore them is what in reality happened on the old MG and how that ended is common knowledge. Sad
There's the Captcha solution, which deals more with bots than the 'alive' spammer/troll.
Bolkonskij's suggestion is in the abscence of 'real' mods/admins a good proposition. The spammer uses multiple boards and to concentrate on one there must a big gain. The troll is a totally different piece of work.
You could introduce Captchas to registering membership and each comment and as a honey trap a totally free topic which is emptied automagically each 6th hour or so. The users frequenting that topic can be questioned as worthy members or not.
(this is my ramblings without any deeper knowledge of PHP, data bases or the darker parts of www culture)

Where I've had to deal with spammers before, what worked for us was to mark the accounts as spam and ignore their posts, so they would post but nothing would be recorded / subsequently displayed.

If you have the ability to run periodic jobs, ie. backups, physically delete logically deleted posts and threads, you could allow the spam posts to be recorded and displayed until the job would come along and clean it up. This option was a lot more work, so we didn't porsue it any further.

One thing just struck me after viewing another epic post from the travelling talents; how about disabling HREF-tags in topics/comments? Else I´m all for bertyboys invisible (IIUC) suggestion.

Invisible, or Ignore - when an account marked as a "spammer" presses the "Save" button, the post is ignored, nothing is saved, not even the fact that they have tried to make a post.
IIRC we called it the FOADYCSWPOSS protocol. FOAD and WPOS stand for what you think they stand for, the final S is for Spammer, CS you can guess when it's taken in context.

Hows about having a button called 'Spam' that after say 5 people have clicked on that person get temporarily banned until a moderator/admin can check the places where its marked as spam and decide to perma ban or let them back in to MG; I know this sounds like a lot of work but just think how rewarding it would be to smack some 11 year old with a perma ban every day/ week/ hour Laughing out loud

Perhaps I shouldn't say this (it just feels a little too evil), but an effective way of dealing with live spammers/trolls is to build the system so that once their account is flagged as spam, the system does not display their comments or edits to anyone -- except them. Alternatively, we could hide their comments only for logged on users (again except for them), so at least we wouldn't have to endure it. Think of it as an added bonus for registering/logging-in. In either senario, I would never give the power of the 'spam flag' to anyone but a dev/mod.

I think the nest way to implement spam report is have the function were regular users can mark a post or a profile as a spam. I think that would really be a more efficient way to do it. Though it could be abused to report users you are not in good terms with, but it still has to be reviewed by the moderator before any action would be dealt.

Yup! Although I must say that Macintosh Garden is the most amiable forum I've been to. I think it's because of a tight-knit niche group who care about old Mac apps and games...and the fact we don't have political forums.

on my board (which is kinda just for experiments) 95% of all spam accounts are either registered with (insert 2 digit num here)@businessinfoservicess.com or (insert 2 digit num here)@backlinks.we.bs, the most effective way i found to deal with it is to delete the spam account then if 2 or more spam accounts are signed up from one domain i ban the hole domain
