Can't get SheepShaver to boot (formerly the "Basilisk II for Windows" thread)

OK, I have Basilisk II for Mac. It has its quirks, and frankly, I'd rather have a real Mac, but for what I have, its pretty decent. Now, I'm not up to installing SheepShaver yet: I tried twice, both ended in failure and frustration (best I got was a blinking question mark). I do have, however, a Windows side of the machine, and I'd appreciate it if there was Basilisk for it, too.

But I don't want to set everything up again, so is there a way I could just download SheepShaver for Windows and drop in my "BasiDisks" and be ready to go? On a related note, since my "BasiDisks" are substantially heavy as far as space goes, could I just install both versions of Basilisk on a flash drive and be able to use it cross-platform?

I dont seem to quite get your point - I got BII and SS running on OSX, Windows and Linux using the same disk images on different hosts. The emulators setup on OSX seemed to be easiest for me.
Try the lastest versions from Emaculation. SS for OSX may require the stand alone config editor, if the built in wont work for you.
Images made for BII will usually not work with SS and vice versa. Installations "for every Mac" of 7.5, 7.6 and 8.1 may be an exception. Using images alternately for OSX or Windy hosts should work, if they reside e.g. on a FAT32 volume. I used images on Linux, that were stored on Windows NTFS disks. If you want to try read/write access to NTFS volumes from OSX, try http://ntfs-mounter.en.softonic.com/mac that one works fine for me.

TataMisias install may be a good starting point as it boots BII and SS (with Old World ROM).

As SS is up and running it should be easy to install the desired OS on an empty volume.

I wasn't clear, I suppose. What I wanted to know was not between SheepShaver and Basilisk, it was sharing a Basilisk between Mac and Windows. SheepShaver is beside this point.

Regardless, I wanted to put Basilisk on Windows. So I copied my emulated disks and the ROM over, only for the Basilisk II for Windows announces that it can't read the ROM (even after I appended .ROM to it). What.

The ROM´s name should be unconcerned, as long as you point to the correct path. Any chance something was damaged while copying? (I ruined some JPEGS moving them via Bluetooth)
You might try another 1MB ROM from RedundantRobot.
Disksharing with Mac/Windows should not be an issue, as long as you dont use both systems the same time.

NICE! I'll use that for SheepShaver. Perhaps I can finally play Yoot Tower again!

Bad news: I followed all the directions (burned a copy of the 8.5 ISO, did all the ROM set-up), inserted the 8.5 disk, mounted it on OS X, and when SheepShaver started up, it ejected the CD! What gives?

I found this: http://www.emaculation.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=40191 and tried to run the DiskTools85 IMG which did open a strangely shrunken black and white Mac OS logo and a blue bar running it. And then, kaboom.

Wait, I think I may have found my problem. Hold on.

Nope, didn't work. I just don't understand why it's not working. I did delete the old Preferences, I followed the tutorials linked above exactly, got Mac OS 8.5 from the Garden and burned the ISO directly to a CD via Disk Utility, and it just refuses to reads it. Spits it out. How do I view the sheepshaver_prefs file to show what's going on?

as an addendum, if I use the original ISO, lock it, and try to mount it, nothing happens. It still gives me the flashing question mark. 32 bit mode doesn't work either.

Could you try booting with an image proven to run?
http://www.redundantrobot.com/sheepshaver-tutorial/
has a OS9 image, maybe not perfect, but good enough for trying.
You may want the stand alone prefs editor too:

Ah, thanks! I appreciated that! After booting with the OS 9 IMG, I was able to load the OS 8.5 CD and install it without a hitch. And because the boot disk (Alpha) was alphabetically first, it loads 8.5 by default. Yay!

BUT my main intention wasn't to add emulators to my Mac, it was to play Yoot Tower. When I tried loading the application (from Mac Garden's disk image, which booted on my iMac, so we know it works in theory) refused to run. Bumping the RAM up to 512MB RAM in the Prefs didn't help, or adjusting the RAM allotment of the program itself. Trying to load a QuickTime movie in Yoot Tower's files, however, caused the "Pro" window to start to appear, of which it crashed. Still, I feel encouraged, particularly because I haven't upgraded QuickTime to the tutorial's specifications.
